Know your risk factors

Be aware of risk factors for certain common diseases, like diabetes and heart disease, and learn how to minimize your risks. If you are at risk for a chronic disease or condition, find out what screening tests you should have and how often. Early detection and treatment can make a huge difference in curing or managing disease.

Some diseases are "symptomless" for years until the damage is done. Two of these diseases are diabetes and heart disease. Adult on-set (or type 2) diabetes is becoming more and more common in this country. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the US. Heart disease is the leading cause of death. Both can be delayed or prevented with life style changes such as increasing your level of activity and making simple changes in your diet. Of course if you smoke, don't!

Check to see if you are at risk and what you can do about it.
